Our Story
First Born® Founded in New Mexico!
In 1997, First Born® was established in New Mexico, marking the beginning of its journey to support families and promote early childhood development. This milestone laid the foundation for a program dedicated to providing vital resources and assistance to families across the state
Partnership with Gila Regional Medical Center and Grant County Health Council
Also in 1997, the Gila Regional Medical Center and Grant County Health Council demonstrated their commitment to supporting early childhood development by partnering with First Born® as a demonstration project in Grant County. This collaboration paved the way for the program to expand its reach and impact within the local community.
Becomes One of Top 10 Innovative and Exemplary Programs
In 2002, the First Born Program was named one of the nation’s 10 Most Innovative and Exemplary Prevention Programs by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) and collaborating agencies.
Expands with LANL Support
First Born® expands to Taos, Rio Arriba, and Los Alamos with the support of the LANL Foundation.
Research Published in 'Social Work Practice'
First Born® achieved a significant academic milestone when research conducted by Ivan de la Rosa was published in 'Social Work Practice.' This publication underscored the program's contributions to the field, showcasing its effective strategies and outcomes in early childhood development and care.
Research with RAND Corporation Begins
In 2010, First Born® initiated a collaborative research partnership with the RAND Corporation, a prestigious global policy think tank. This significant endeavor aimed to enhance the effectiveness and reach of First Born®'s prevention programs through rigorous evaluation and data-driven insights.
RCT Research Published in 'Pediatrics'
First Born® marked a pivotal achievement with the publication of its Randomized Control Trial research in 'Pediatrics,' one of the leading journals in child health. This study provided rigorous evidence of the program's effectiveness, showcasing its significant impact on improving pediatric health outcomes.
Model Office Relocates to Santa Fe Community College
In 2018, the First Born® Model Office transitioned to a new location at Santa Fe Community College. This move strategically positioned the office within an educational hub, enhancing its accessibility and capacity to collaborate on initiatives aimed at improving community health and education.
Curriculum Overhaul and Website Launch
First Born® undertook a significant transformation by overhauling its curriculum and establishing a stronger online presence with the launch of a comprehensive website. This dual initiative was designed to enhance the program's educational offerings and increase its accessibility, ensuring that more families and professionals could benefit from its resources.
Adapting to Meet Needs During COVID-19
In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded, First Born® responded swiftly and effectively to the new challenges. The organization adapted its services to continue supporting families amid unprecedented conditions, ensuring that critical support and resources remained accessible when they were needed most.
Expansion to Minnesota
First Born® broadened its reach by expanding operations to Minnesota, marking its first venture outside its home state. This strategic expansion aimed to replicate its successful model in a new region, bringing its innovative early childhood and family support programs to a broader audience.
25th Anniversary Celebration
First Born® celebrated a significant milestone—its 25th anniversary. This landmark occasion marked a quarter-century of dedication to early childhood development and family support. The organization commemorated this achievement by reflecting on its past successes and renewing its commitment to empowering families and communities for the future.
Renamed as First Born® and More
In 2023, to more accurately reflect the diverse population it serves, First Born® updated its name to First Born® and More. This name change underscores the program's commitment to inclusivity and serving a broader range of community needs.
Launches Research Project with UNM
First Born® and More, in collaboration with the UNM Cradle to Career Policy Institute, launched a three-year research project in 2023. This initiative aims to enhance child and family policy development through rigorous and targeted research.
Partnership for Research Agenda Development
In 2023, First Born® and More partners with James Bell Associates to develop a comprehensive research agenda. A step forward toward evidence-based readiness.
Launches New Branding
In 2024, First Born® and More unveiled new branding to align with its evolving mission and the expanded scope of its services. The refreshed brand identity aims to better communicate the organization’s comprehensive approach to supporting families and communities.
Curriculum and Training Overhaul
First Born® and More updated its curriculum and training to enhance the effectiveness and relevance of its offerings to ensure that the needs of current and future partners and the families engaged in services are met.
